The Chicks are celebrating one of the most important albums in their catalogue, with an expanded 20th anniversary edition of Taking The Long Way - out now!

Originally released in 2006, the album marked a major chapter in the trio's career. Not only did it signal their return following a lengthy hiatus, it also arrived during a period when the group found themselves at the centre of intense public and political debate.

Announcing the anniversary release on social media, the band reflected on what the album still means to them two decades later.

"It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Taking the Long Way. These songs take us right back to one of the most defining times in our lives, and it’s incredible how much they still resonate today. We’re so excited to finally share some unreleased tracks and to perform the entire album on this tour. It feels like the perfect way to celebrate this journey with the fans who have been with us every step of the way."

The expanded edition gives listeners access to several recordings that have either never been officially released or have been difficult to find. Among the highlights are Thin Line and Live Wire. Fans can also hear Flowers (Demo Version), offering a glimpse into the creative process behind the album.

For many country music fans, Taking The Long Way remains one of the defining releases of the 2000s. The record captured a pivotal moment in The Chicks' journey and featured themes that reflected both the wider political climate and the challenges facing the group at the time.

The album followed a turbulent period after lead singer Natalie Maines publicly criticised former US President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. The fallout sparked widespread controversy and led to a significant pause in the band's career before their eventual return to the studio.

When Taking The Long Way arrived, it was widely viewed as a bold statement from a group determined to move forward on their own terms. Songs such as Not Ready To Make Nice addressed the criticism they had faced while reaffirming their willingness to stand by their beliefs.

The anniversary release also carries added historical significance because it was the final studio album released under the name The Dixie Chicks. Years later, the trio officially adopted the name The Chicks, marking a new era while continuing to honour the music that helped shape their legacy.

Two decades on, Taking The Long Way continues to resonate with listeners thanks to its honest songwriting, emotional depth and fearless approach to difficult subjects. With previously unheard material now available alongside the original record, the anniversary edition offers longtime fans a chance to revisit a landmark moment in country music history, while introducing a new generation to one of The Chicks' most influential albums.
