In 2021, Jenny Mitchell released Trouble Finds a Girl, a powerful and deeply meaningful duet with her song sister, Tami Neilson.
The track originated from a conversation between Jenny and Tami about journalist Alison Mau's #metoo investigative works, and was written as a direct response to sexual misconduct and assault within Aotearoa's music industry.
Trouble Finds a Girl is a song that I wrote with my song sister Tami Neilson a few years ago. It's all about creating a safer future for everybody in the music industry and outside of the music industry. I wrote it thinking a lot about my little sisters growing up and entering the world and entering the music industry.
The music video includes friends, family and allies of Jenny, and you can hear Kylie Price, Kaylee Bell and Fanny Lumsden's voices at the beginning of the video.
Standing in that room, with a group of people who I know feel so fiercely about creating a safer future, was such an electric, inspiring moment. Standing there with Tami, singing to my younger sisters, it was such a grounding moment. Tears were definitely flowing. You’ll hear Kylie, Kaylee and Fanny’s voices at the beginning of the clip. Some of my nearest and dearest, who each inspired me endlessly.

With songs of grace and grit, Jenny Mitchell is a Melbourne-based storyteller from the deep south of NZ. Between opening for The Lumineers and Kasey Chambers, her most recent tour generated over 200 Safe Nights for women escaping domestic violence and her new 2x Golden Guitar nominated album, Forest House, is as nostalgic as it is powerful.
