Holy Days is now in cinemas, and its soundtrack comes with a strong Kiwi touch, featuring three songs from Tami Neilson.
Front and centre is Tami Neilson's powerful rendition of Are You Sure, a gospel-leaning track originally recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1958. Director Nat Boltt specifically asked Tami to lend her voice to the track for a key moment in the film, which also features her previously released songs Sister Mavis and Queenie Queenie.
Tami says she didn’t hesitate when the opportunity came up but quickly realised the challenge ahead. The song remains in the original key Aretha recorded as a teenager, pushing Tami out of her comfort zone.
Armed with throat coat tea, honey, and “the best band in New Zealand,” she powered through the recording, describing the experience as both daunting and rewarding. After finishing the final note, she admitted she was completely spent, "vowing never to attempt such folly again."
The film itself boasts an impressive cast, including Judy Davis, Jacki Weaver, and Miriam Margolyes, alongside newcomer Elijah Tamati in the lead role.
Released on March 27 alongside the film’s North American debut, Are You Sure is out now, marking another standout moment for Tami on the global stage!
