Kacey Musgraves has officially ended her Dry Spell.
Kacey Musgraves has officially returned with new music. After teasing fans on social media for days, the singer-songwriter released her new single Dry Spell, offering the first preview of her upcoming album Middle of Nowhere set for release May 1.
The track is a playful yet candid country confessional about loneliness and desire. In the song, Kacey leans into her signature wit with tongue-in-cheek lyrics, singing: “It’s been a real long 335 days/And the last time, it wasn’t good anyway.”
The single arrives alongside a music video directed by Kacey and Hannah Lux Davis, which shows the singer wandering through a grocery store during a lonely late-night outing.
Dry Spell serves as the lead single from Middle of Nowhere, through Lost Highway Records. The album features 13 tracks and includes collaborations with Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and Gregory Alan Isakov.
In a statement, Kacey explained that the album was shaped during an extended period of being single.
“The bulk of this record was made during the longest single period of my life,” she said. “For the first time, it actually felt incredible being alone and existing in a space not defined by anyone else.”
She added that the concept of “liminal space” (both emotional and physical) became a major influence while making the record.
“I became so at ease with being in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in many senses and sitting in the un-comfort of the undefined.”
Kacey produced the album alongside longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk. The project’s title was inspired by a sign she spotted in her hometown of Golden, Texas, which reads “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere.” The small town has a population of fewer than 300 people.
Middle of Nowhere will mark Kacey’s sixth studio album and the start of a new era for the Grammy-winning artist. With Dry Spell released, fans now have a first taste of the upcoming album.
