Before kicking off her Dreamsicle tour, Maren Morris sat down with us to talk about her upcoming return to New Zealand, and the deeply personal album that inspired the tour.

Her latest album is a bold, vulnerable journey through the highs and lows of recent years. “It’s been messy, up and down, manic depressive, fun, emotional… but I think that’s why it’s my most honest and best work,” she shared.

One of the most surprising fan favourites? Too Good. “I didn’t know if people were going to feel like it was too brash or in your face,” Maren said. “But I think that’s maybe what people are craving, bold honesty.”

She also opened up about Lemonade, the cheeky, cathartic opener to the album. “I was going through a lot of personal drama… but my friends said, ‘Let’s write something that’s going to make you laugh.’”

The result? A song that turned her day around. “Even though it’s sly, it has emotional resonance for me,” Maren said. “It was a really bad day that turned into a better one because of that song.”

Another standout, Cry In The Car, explores the quiet power of private emotion. “I don’t want people to think they’ve achieved something by upsetting me,” she said. “You will see a composed human right now. But I’m not going to allow you to see me fall apart.”

Maren also spoke about parenting and emotional growth, especially through the eyes of her son. “He’s more emotionally intelligent than most of the people I’ve dated,” she laughed. “He knows how to identify what he’s feeling and show it.”

When asked about coming back to NZ, Maren said it was important to her to cover "the full map". “For this record, I really just wanted to have a proper album tour,” she said. “That meant the States, UK, Europe, and for the first time as a headliner, going back to Australia and New Zealand. I'm excited that we're finally getting to do this the right way."
