Sylvee 'Before I Met You' ft. Sam Heselwood

Nelson singer-songwriter Sylvee has expanded her sound with Before I Met You - a poignant country-pop track featuring Sam Heselwood.

The song explores the moment after heartbreak when you long to feel like yourself again. Lyrics from the song like “I just wanna feel ok again, without moving away or cutting my hair” describe vividly the understated, relatable moments of heartbreak, and the ache of trying to move on after love fades.

Before I Met You isn’t drawn from personal experience, and instead tells a completely fictional story, a point of difference in a genre often rooted in autobiography.

“Country music has definitely been a bit of a genre shift for me, but it’s where I feel the most at home. Emotion and past experiences have helped to mould this story. The song is about going through a breakup and wanting to feel normal again, but also finding healthier ways to move forward.”

The track is collaboration with Sam Heselwood, a UK-based Christchurch artist. Known for his soulful melodies, his voice adds depth and warmth to the song, a meeting of two voices that blend seamlessly.

“I absolutely loved being a part of Before I Met You. Country music has always been where my heart lies, I’ve always wanted to dip my toes into the genre and when Sylvee sent the song over it instantly felt right.”

Sylvee is a singer-songwriter from Nelson, New Zealand. Sylvee made her debut in 2019 with her EP, Life on Mars. With New Zealand’s country music scene on the rise, she’s now looking to make a name for herself in country pop, combining her signature soulful vocals with her love for modern pop.
